Easy Sew Wreath

Last summer I went to visit my folks who reside in Arizona. Notice the word summer. Ugh, it was hot! Ok, that was to be expected. Anyway, knowing we would be indoors for most of my visit, my mother came up with this fun project to keep us occupied.

Her idea came from this pattern she found on Amazon:

 fold N Stitch Pattern
Cut N Stitch Wreath Pattern

She then found these easy, pre cut squares of foam. Sold in a pack of 12 6x6 inch squares, one side already had iron on interfacing which makes creating this wreath so easy:

Bosal In-R-Foam 6x6 One Sided Fusable Squares
Now, she had only ordered two packs of these squares, one for her and one for me, but we got really into making these and decided to try to make our own by purchasing foam by the yard and iron on interfacing since the pre cut squares were not available at our local fabric and craft stores. It might sound like the way to go in a pinch, but I will explain further on why this didn't work as we expected. So, my advice is order the foam pre cut with the iron on interfacing on one side already.

The next step is to cut the fabric. For this project you can choose two or three fabrics based on your design idea. I chose to use three fabrics. I played around with them prior to cutting using the photo on the pattern. This helped me decide which fabrics would be the back, front, and middle square. Using the instructions I cut the squares of fabric. Two of the fabrics are cut to 6.5" and one of the fabric is cut to 5.5".

This is the fabric my mother chose for her wreath. Fall appropriate, no?
She chose to go with two fabrics.
Once you have all your fabrics cut, it is time to start sewing. Place the two of the 6.5" squares of fabric right side together. Center them on the side of the foam squares that have NO interfacing. Sew the seam around the foam square. Carefully cut an X in the center of ONE of the squares, the one not touching the foam. Now Carefully turn the square right sides out through the hole the X created. If you did this correctly, you will end up with the X side on the interfaced side and the foam sandwiched inside.

Next, layer on one of the 5.5" squares you cut and iron the square so the X is as closed as it can be and the smaller square conceals it. Using a decorative stitch, stitch down the edges of the 5.5" square. Voila! You have a square finished. Do this 11 more times.

Using a hard piece of plastic or a piece of cardboard, make yourself a template of the stitching line pattern. I made mine out of a piece of stencil plastic. Mine looked like this:

Stencil plastic was used to make my stitching guide.
Side note: Have you tried those clips you can see in the picture above? OMG, my mother gave me a bag for Christmas and I don't think I will ever use pins again! They are super easy to use and hold tight without poking your fingers or getting lost in the carpet only to be found later when you have bare feet. They looks like this:

You can get a bag here.

Ok, back to the sewing. Use the guide to determine where to sew your squares together. You must be consistent in order for the circle to be accurate and lay right.

Here you can see how the squares are lined up and sewn together. This was my fun Halloween wreath. Once all the squares are sewn together you will find a circle has formed. It should look something like this:

Wreath once squares are connected
At this point, you begin sewing the points together. First you want to hand stitch them like this:

Sew the points together.
Next, I chose to add a little button as an embellishment. You don't have to, but I thought it turned out nicer, looking a little more finished. Don't you agree?

Adding a little embellishment for extra pizzazz.
Once you have them all sewn together you can add a hanger to the back to hang the wreath on a door, or, as I chose, make it a centerpiece for your table. The pattern shows additional bows and decorations for a door wreath. I put a candy bowl in the center of mine.

Finished Wreath
So there you have it. Easy as pie for just about any skill level.

**Oh, remember how I said I would tell you the problem with cutting your own foam? Ya, well I cut mine a little smaller for the Halloween wreath without considering I would need more squares to make a circle that would lay flat. My Halloween wreath does not lay flat. As a result, I stuck a jar shaped like a pumpkin full of candy in the middle to hold it down, but in hindsight I should have cut more squares.

Notice how this one does not lay flat?
Happy sewing! If you give this fun project a try, be sure to post a picture in the comments below!

Tradition of the Yule Log in a Tiny House

In my tiny home we celebrate Yule. Yule normally falls on either the 21st or 22nd of December each year. Tuesday, December 22 is the Winter Solstice this year. This is longest night of the year, when the light of day is shorter than the dark of night. After the solstice, slowly, day by day, the days will become longer until the Summer Solstice when light will be longer than dark.

The Yule Log tradition traces way back to the Norse. It is a symbol for always having warmth. As you may remember, people heated their home with wood, and wood had a tendency to become scarce. The original Yule log was a full tree, brought into the home with great ceremony and one end was shoved into the hearth. The fire already going in the hearth would have been lit with a small section of the previous year's Yule log remnants. The new tree would burn until a small section was left. This small section would be preserved as the Yule log. And  so it would continue, year after year.

Top 10 Gifts for Tiny House Dwellers

Know someone who lives in a small space? Limited space means practical, but awesome gifts! Here are some holiday suggestions for gifts that make sense for people who live in tiny houses or even those who don't.

This coffee maker, oven, and griddle in one will multi-task and help you by combining multiple appliances into one practical and cool looking counter top unit.

Digital photo frames are the modern day equivalent to all those photo albums you see at grandma's house. Thousands of photos will rotate reminding you of all the good times and places you have been. A bonus is it will function as a nightlight as well.

Dice games are great because they take up so little space. Dice are easy to replace if lost too!

A storage ottoman allows for extra seating in a tiny house as well as storage for blankets, magazines, and such. Ottomans are very practical and attractive.

All kinds of collapsible kitchen goods are available these days. Collanders, measuring cups, measuring spoons, bowls, and more all will store with the smallest of footprints when collapsed flat. Silicone is super easy to clean as well!

One of the things that is toughest in a tiny house is corralling important letters such as utility bills and where to store your car keys. This attractive and practical shelf will take care of both dilemmas and make a convenient place to stick the mail and drop the keys as you enter with your hands full.

Dee Williams memoir talks about her adventure of downsizing her life to her tiny home. Building it by herself, Dee rose to the challenge and embraced a more simplified, far less stressful life. Dee is a power house in the world of tiny houses.

I love this shower caddy for a couple of reasons. First, I love that it is mesh which means it won't hold water and get mildewey. Secondly I love that it hangs on the curtain hooks instead of depending on useless little suction cups that never hold. This would be good for storing children's bath toys so they don't get icky.

I adore this cutting board. The drawers can be used for the food you prep or to store flatware, plastic baggies, etc. Every kitchen needs a cutting board. This one will earn its keep.

Not the most personal of all gifts, gift cards allow the receiver to choose what they need for their tiny home. Try pairing it with a small token gift such as an oven mitt and kitchen utensil or with a mug and box of hot cocoa mix.

All of these great items can be ordered online, so if you are like me and think Black Friday is just craziness, check 'em out. Most, if not all, are Amazon Prime eligible.

Happy shopping!

Pet Food Storage

I have a dog and a cat. Both are deaf. The cat is blind as well. AND the cat will only eat dog food. The dog will eat anything. He is a fatty. To save on costs, I purchase large bags of dog food and refill an airtight storage container that is slim and slides in between the pantry wall and the refrigerator. It is not attractive, but it works well enough. This is what it looks like:

I would describe this container as utilitarian. It does just what it is designed to do, no more, no less. However, in my Shouse I will not have the clever stash space to slide this into. Last night while out holiday shopping I stopped in at my local World Market. This place really has some great finds from around the world. I actually popped in to pick up a bottle of Muscato for my Secret Santa exchange at work, but, of course, had to walk around. That is when I found this:

This large canister holds 20# of dog food and stands 15" tall x 12" in diameter. The lid fits snuggly and the scoop is included. The photo really doesn't do this justice. It is a lovely creamy white and has a brown lid. The entire can is metal. The best part? The price is $24.99 on sale right now (you save $5). You can order it on their website at http://www.worldmarket.com/product/pet-food-canister-wscoop.do?from=ac . This cannister allows me to hide a good quantity of dog food in plain site. It has a nice homey feel and will blend into my decor very well.

So, if you are looking for a great gift for the pet lover in your life, you should consider one of these. I am sure I will be using it for years to come.

How do you store your pet food?

Easy Gift Idea for Men This Holiday Season - MicroTouch Switchblade™ - Manscaper's Dream!

This year I think I found a perfect gift for both my son and my boyfriend! Remember when I reviewed the MicroTouch One™ (if not, go check it out since it is awesome!)? Well, here is another great item to go along with that.  It is the MicroTouch Switchblade™. I received one in advance to give it a review to see if I like it before I ordered the rest. I, after all, don't want to give a gift that I am unsure of. I am definitely not disappointed.

First off, let me just tell you that this thing is versatile! It has a micro end for grooming tight areas such as noses and ears, then it has a larger trimmer on the other side for bigger areas. Whichever side is not in use is stored behind a protective piece that slides back and forth. MicroTouch Switchblade™ is comfortable in the hand and not too heavy. The precision trimmer (the smaller end) easily trims the nose, ears, eyebrows, neckline, and sideburns. The full size groomer tackles chest, back, arms, legs, and those "other" parts we like to groom.

It comes as a set that has four guards to use to adjust the amount of hair you remove. For example you can choose the best length for your sideburns versus the best length for the hair in your eyebrows, and completely remove hair on your ears. MicroTouch Switchblade™ is brilliant!

The blades are stainless steel and made in Germany, which makes me think they will last a long, long time. The blades trimmed without issue, like a knife through hot butter, the blades eradicated hair with ease. Did I mention the LED light? Yes, that's right, a little light helps in those dark crevices and areas where shadows cause missed hairs. Another great thing I noticed is that unlike traditional clippers, you don't have to take this one apart and oil its parts. It requires no fancy maintenance. The unit runs on 2 AAA size batteries. I have used it for over 2 weeks now without any reduction in power.

Let me recap what I liked about the MicroTouch Switchblade™ :

  • Stainless Steel German engineered blades
  • Four sizes of guards to help with consistent hair length
  • Micro precision end and a full size grooming end help you manscape from head to toe
  • Built in light
  • Gentle and easy to use. Lightweight too!
  • Convenient size with built in slider to protect blades.
  • 2 AAA batteries power the unit

This is one of the best Christmas, Yule, Hanukkah, or birthday gifts for a guy I have come across in a long time. Right now I see they are offering a special deal at the website, www.GetSwitchblad.com  which includes a grooming kit. At just $19.99 for this all-in-one head to toe groomer, this is a very economical and thoughtful gift for all the men on your shopping list. Save yourself the frustration of fighting others on Black Friday and order one online or, if you live for the challenge of shopping during the season or don't want to pay shipping, you can find the MicroTouch Switchblade™ at CVS, Walgreens, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and/or Walgreens.

Happy Holiday Shopping Season!

Check out this adorable hat! It is a Flipeez Huggy Monkey. You squeeze the blue bulb (enclosed in some gloriously soft and fuzzy fabric) and the arms of the monkey open up like it wants a hug. Really stinkin' cute, but practical at the same time! The inside is lined with super soft fleece and the outside is knit. The eyes and nose features are felt. The lining is secured to the outside of the hat with a blanket stitch and the tubing that allows the arms to move is hidden in all the softness. The entire hat is of great quality and very warm since it covers the ears. This hat is one size fits all and we have had a great time with everyone in my family trying it on.

Ironically, we were at Walgreens in West Seattle last night and found a display that had the Twitchy Kitty, Playfull Puppy, Peek-a-Boo Monster, and the Huggy Monkey. There are seven different hats total, including an Curious Owl, Rascally Rabbit, and Ranger Raccoon, which we haven't seen in person yet (I will be ordering a Curious Owl and a Ranger Racoon as gifts this year). We sat and played with each of the different kinds and were cracking up that the kitty tail goes up and down in the back and the puppy ears were adorable flopping up and down. Lily decided the monkey is still her favorite (see the pictures as she won't go anywhere without it now) and lots of folks on our flight to Seattle on Saturday were asking where they could buy one.

I have a feeling that lots of these will be found under holiday trees and wrapped in pretty packages this winter! Each hat is $19.95 and can be ordered online at www.flipeez.com. I also found them at Walgreens and have seen them advertised at Toys-R-Us. I would call to see if your local discount store carries them before driving on a hunt. Who wouldn't love to get one of these this holiday season?
